Best newborn baby gifts

12 Apr

With each of my two baby girls I have been absolutely overwhelmed by the generousity of friends and family in showering my little bundles with gifts – and I’ve never had a baby shower. With a combination of hand-me-downs and gifts, I have rarely had to purchase any clothes or toys for the littlies. However, I have come to realise that certain gifts end up getting used far more than others. Don’t get me wrong – they are all appreciated – BUT sometimes I think that if people are going to spend their hard earned on a gift, then you want to make sure it gets used. So – here’s my list of the best presents – and the ones that you should maybe think twice about.

Best Gifts
1) everyday clothing ie jumpsuits (Baby Gap does fantastic ones – they are super-stretchy which makes changing a lot easier)
2) a gift voucher to a baby store
3) muslin wraps (make sure they’re the big ones) or even better still the ‘Love me baby, wrap me up’ – it’s absolutely brilliant – baby’s arms cannot escape and the zips eliminate the challenge of wrapping
4) feeding equipment – like plastic spoons and plastic bibs. This will be incredibly useful once the baby starts on solids, about 5 – 6 months of age
5) books. Even newborns love the sound of voices – and sometimes as a mum you run out of conversation – this is where books are fabulous. Also, they don’t take up much space, perfect for parents living in a small home/unit. Also, the cloth books are perfect for babies to grab and chew on.
6) nappies – sure, it’s extremely practical but nappies are expensive and it’s one gift that you can absolutely GUARANTEE will be used.
7) An activity mat. But just make sure the parents don’t already have one – they’re pretty bulky
8) baby bath towels and face washers
9) bibs – little ones are best for newborns and the ones with fleece on the underside are great for keeping baby dry
10) clothes for when the baby is a little older – but just keep the seasons in mind – if you’re buying a size ‘0’ (which fits a 6 month old) then it needs to be appropriate for the opposite season to which the baby was born.
11) baby bath wash
12) Playgro Activity Rings. There aren’t many fabulous toys for little babies – but this is one of the best. Babies from 3 -4 months can play with them – and best of all – they’re cheap.

The not-so-useful gifts
1) Rattles – a baby only has two hands, therefore anymore than 2 rattles isn’t terrible useful. Yet they are among the most popular gifts to give.
2) Going out clothes – like pretty dresses. Yes, they are absolutely gorgeous but a baby spends about 3/4 of the time in bed – therefore, whatever clothing you buy needs to be suitable for sleeping.
3) bunny rugs. They’re just not something I have ever used much – mainly because newborn babies tend not to spend much time on the floor. They’re either being fed or sleeping. And – once they’re a bit older, it’s not much for them to just lie on the floor – a play mat is a bit more fun.
4) toys that make lots of loud noise
5) knitted booties – cute for decorating a nursery but not practical footwear
6) mittens – they never stay on
7) caps – might be useful if your baby is born in the middle of winter – but I’ve had two summer babies, so not so useful

Very best gift for new born babies are clothing. Those are incredibly useful as the baby starts growing, also it is for everyday practical use.
